Photo AI Alternative: What the Subscription Buys

Photo AI tiers likeness and quality by plan, and gates commercial use behind $49/month. Here is how to read that, and when credits fit better.

Photo AI is a subscription, and that one structural fact decides most of whether it fits you. Everything else — the enormous library of photo packs, the video generation, the free tools bolted on the side — follows from a business model where you pay every month and get a monthly credit allowance you either use or lose.

If you generate photos continuously, that is a good deal and this post is not going to argue otherwise. If you want a headshot, it is worth understanding two things about the pricing page before you pick a tier.

Likeness is a paid feature

Fetched from photoai.com/pricing on September 10, 2026, here is what each plan says about itself:

PlanMonthlyAnnualCredits/monthQuality and likeness
Starter$19$99/yr50"Low quality photos", "Low likeness"
Pro$49$349/yr1,000"Medium quality photos", "Medium likeness"
Max$99$599/yr3,000"High quality photos", "High likeness"
Ultra$199$1,199/yr10,000"Ultra quality photos", "Ultra-high likeness"

Those quality and likeness descriptions are Photo AI's own words on their own pricing cards, not a reviewer's judgment. Which is unusually candid — most tools in this category will not tell you the cheap tier produces a worse likeness — but it also means "plans starting at $19/month" and "a headshot that looks like you" are not the same purchase.

Likeness is the entire game in an AI headshot. A beautifully lit portrait of someone who is nearly you is worthless for a LinkedIn profile. So if you are evaluating Photo AI for a headshot specifically, price it at Max, or at Pro if you want to test cheaply, and treat Starter as a trial rather than a plan.

Commercial use starts at $49

The Starter plan's feature list includes the line "For personal use only." A "Commercial use license" appears as a Pro feature, along with importing photos, writing your own prompts, and Remix.

This matters more than it sounds. A headshot on your personal LinkedIn is arguably personal use; the same image on your employer's team page, in a pitch deck, on a conference speaker bio, or on a book jacket is not. Photo AI's Starter tier also has no ability to write your own prompts, which for a headshot means you take what the packs give you.

One inconsistency worth reading past

The Starter card lists "No free auto-generated photos" and then, a few lines below, lists 48 free auto-generated photos per model. Both lines are on the same card. This is almost certainly a stale template rather than anything deliberate, but it is a reminder to confirm what a tier includes at checkout rather than from a table — including this one.

What Photo AI is genuinely good at

Be clear about this, because a comparison that only lists a competitor's weaknesses is not a comparison:

  • Breadth. Over a hundred photo packs, from LinkedIn headshots through travel, dating, and holiday sets, plus AI video, a background remover, an upscaler, a colorizer, restoration, face swap, and a batch image-to-image mode. It is a very large surface for one subscription.
  • Velocity. It ships new models and features constantly, and it is run solo by Pieter Levels, which is why it moves faster than teams ten times the size.
  • Volume. At Max and Ultra, the monthly credit allowance is generous enough that heavy users get a genuinely low cost per image.
  • Clear deletion documentation. Their data deletion page tells you exactly which button removes a photo, that deleted photos are permanently removed after 30 days, that models are deleted separately, and that all your data is deleted 90 days after you cancel. That is more operational detail than most competitors publish, and it is exactly what you want in writing before you upload your face anywhere.

Where 43frames is a different shape

First, a disclosure that matters for a comparison like this: Photo AI advertises Nano Banana Pro on every tier, and 43frames runs Nano Banana models too. Where both products use the same underlying model, neither of us is going to win on raw image quality — the difference is packaging, control, and price, and any comparison claiming otherwise is selling you something.

43frames sells one-time credit packs rather than a subscription, and it is a studio you steer rather than a pack you receive.

  • 10 starter credits on signup, once, with no card required.
  • Packs at $10 for 100 credits, $18 for 200, $45 for 500, and $80 for 1,000 — down to $0.08 per credit at the largest pack. Credits do not expire.
  • Image generation from 1 credit per image, depending on the model.
  • Training a custom model on your own photos costs 50 credits, once. Generating from that model afterward is 1 credit per image.
  • Headshot presets including Professional Headshot, LinkedIn Headshot, CEO and Executive, Lawyer, Doctor, Therapist, Teacher, Nurse, Actor, Author, and Keynote Speaker.
  • The same account also does product photos, restoration, upscaling, and video.

The concrete comparison: a single $10 pack covers training a model on your face plus roughly fifty images from it, and both the model and the leftover credits are still there next year. Photo AI's Pro plan is $49 for that month, and the allowance resets whether or not you used it.

Commercial use on 43frames is allowed subject to applicable law and the upstream providers' terms. We do not promise exclusivity, non-infringement, or intellectual-property validity — that is the narrow, accurate version, and it is not gated behind a tier.

The honest costs of the credit model. There is no monthly allowance, so heavy daily generation gets more expensive than a flat subscription. There is no money-back guarantee on a credit pack. Nobody curates a finished gallery for you. And on retention we are currently behind: 43frames has no automatic deletion window for uploads, and self-serve account deletion is not shipped yet — deletion requests go to privacy@43frames.com. Photo AI's documented 30-day and 90-day clocks are better than that today.

Which one to pick

  • You generate photos most weeks and want the biggest toolbox: Photo AI, at Max. That is what a subscription is for.
  • You need a good headshot once or twice a year: a credit pack costs less than two months of a plan that would produce a likeness worth using, and nothing lapses when you stop.
  • The photo is for your company: budget for Photo AI's Pro tier or above, because Starter is personal use only.
  • You also shoot products or restore family photos: one account covering all of it is the argument for a studio, and it is ours.
  • You are still choosing between AI and a photographer at all: that is the earlier question, and AI headshots vs a photographer does the cost math honestly.

For other single-tool comparisons in this category, we have written up Secta Labs and HeadshotPro, and the best AI headshot generators roundup covers the field. Current pricing for our own packs is on the pricing page — and Photo AI changes theirs often, so confirm on their site before you buy either.
