If you've got a shoebox of instant photos going orange at the edges, the good news is that they're probably in better shape than you fear. The bad news is that two pieces of advice you'll find on the first page of Google — cut off the border, wipe the surface clean — will permanently damage them.

Restoring an old Polaroid is really three separate jobs, and only one of them involves software: stabilize the physical print, digitize it properly, then restore the file. Doing them in that order is what separates a good result from an expensive lesson.

First, the counterintuitive part

The common wisdom is that Polaroids fade faster than ordinary color prints. That's only half right, and the half that's wrong matters for how you triage your box.

Instant photos are genuinely bad at surviving light. The University of Illinois' Preservation Self-Assessment Program states that "All instant photographs are very sensitive to light and have poor light fading stability," and that integral prints — the sealed SX-70 and 600 types most people have — "will fade significantly faster than peel-apart prints."

In the dark, though, instant film's dyes hold up well. The AIC Photographic Materials Group wiki records "excellent dark stability" for dye diffusion transfer prints, while the chromogenic prints most people had developed at a drugstore in the same era are noted for a cyan shift in dark storage — which is why so many 1970s and 80s snapshots have gone pink.

The practical consequence: the Polaroid that lived in a shoebox is often in better condition than the one that lived on the fridge or in a frame. Sort your box by where each photo has been, not by how old it is. The framed ones are your priority.

What actually goes wrong with instant film

Because the whole chemistry is sealed inside the print, instant photos fail in ways that ordinary prints don't:

  • Yellowish staining in the highlights. PSAP notes integral types are "more prone to yellowish staining and fading, especially Polaroid SX-70 from the 1970s and 1980s."
  • Cracking and crazing from humidity swings. PSAP: instant photos are "succeptible [sic] to cracking and crazing as a result of fluctuating humidity," and prints made before 1976 may crack in the image-receiving layer beneath the clear cover sheet.
  • Delamination. PSAP notes that Polaroid's SX-70 integral format "contained as many as thirteen interdependent layers." When they separate, the image is physically displaced.
  • Silver migration. Instant processes don't use liquid baths to wash out residual silver compounds, so the silver stays in the print. PSAP warns that with poor storage "it is possible for the silver image to migrate across the support, distorting the content" — the source of the strange blotching you sometimes see.

Knowing which of these you're looking at tells you what restoration can realistically achieve. More on that below.

Two things not to do

Never cut the white border off. PSAP is unambiguous: "The white border found around instant photos should never be cut off or removed; it provides a barrier to atmospheric pollutants and removal would also weaken the structural integrity of the photograph." The wide bottom border isn't decorative — it's where the developing chemical pod sits. Cutting the frame opens the edge of a sealed sandwich. Scan the whole print, border included.

Never clean the image surface. PSAP's instruction for instant photos is four words: "Do not attempt to clean print surface." Advice to wipe prints with a cloth dampened with water or rubbing alcohol circulates widely on this topic. Don't. Water and solvents on an image layer risk swelling or abrading it, and on a sealed print they can wick into the laminate edge.

What safe handling looks like

Wash and dry your hands, or wear nitrile or lint-free cotton gloves, and hold prints by the edges. The Library of Congress' photograph care leaflet advises avoiding contact with the photograph surface entirely — fingerprint oils cause chemical damage over time. Remove loose dust with gentle air. Anything bonded to the surface, and anything with mold, is a conservator's job.

Storing them properly, once

The general rules for storing photographs — cool, dark, stable humidity, no PVC, no self-stick albums, one enclosure per print — apply here and are covered properly in how to preserve old photos. Two of them matter more for instant film than for anything else in the box, so they're worth calling out.

Stability beats the specific number. The Northeast Document Conservation Center recommends holding relative humidity between 30% and 50% "with fluctuations less than 5% a day." For most prints that's good practice. For an SX-70 it's the difference between an intact print and a cracked one, because the crazing described above is driven by humidity cycling rather than by a steady bad number. An interior closet that never swings beats a climate-controlled room that does.

Dark storage is doing more work than you think. Light fading is where instant film is genuinely weakest, and NEDCC notes that light damage is cumulative and irreversible. Every year on a wall is spent; every year in a box mostly isn't.

Scanning: the step that actually preserves the photo

Here's the part worth internalizing: the scan is the preservation act. The print keeps degrading; the file doesn't. Restoration is cosmetic and you can redo it any time. Digitization is the win you only have to get right once.

Resolution

Polaroid publishes its own dimensions: SX-70, 600, and i-Type film measure 3.108 × 3.024 inches in the image area, and 4.233 × 3.483 inches overall. That small image area is why the "at least 300 DPI" advice floating around this topic is too low:

At 300 DPI you can't reprint at original size with any margin for cropping. Scan at 600 DPI minimum, 1200 DPI if you intend to print larger or feed an upscaler. Save as TIFF or PNG rather than JPEG. Newton rings, and the 5mm fix

Instant prints have a glossy clear top sheet, and pressing that against scanner glass produces rainbow interference patterns. Polaroid documents this and the fix in its own support article on Newton rings: the rings "are caused by an interference pattern produced by the reflection between two surfaces - in this case your scanner glass and the clear top sheet of your Polaroid photo," and "The key is to elevate the photo off of the glass, so that they do not touch (but not so far off the glass that you move outside the focus point of the scanner) - about 5mm is perfect."

Their suggested spacers are a piece of cardboard with a window cut in it, an empty film cassette, or the cover of a slim CD case. It takes two minutes and eliminates a problem that no amount of retouching fixes cleanly.

Two other scanning notes:

  • Don't press glass on a curled print to flatten it. The Library of Congress' digitization guidelines warn this "can cause media to crack or to detach from the item" — and cracking is already instant film's signature failure.
  • There is no negative to scan. Polaroid's own scanning guidance explains that the negative is "completely integrated into the film itself" and "is actually opaque and not translucent." The print is all you have.

Restoring the file

Once you have a good scan, restoration handles the damage that lives in the image rather than in the object. Faded and shifted color, low contrast, dust and surface scratches, general softness, and low resolution all respond well. Run photo restoration on the scan, keep the untouched original file, and compare the two before you commit.

Work in a sensible order: repair damage and correct the color cast first, then upscale, then evaluate faces last. What restoration genuinely can't do

This is where most articles on this topic oversell, so it's worth being direct: AI restoration produces a new plausible image, not recovered data. Where the original signal is physically gone, the tool is guessing — competently, but guessing.

That means these are not fixable, only disguised:

  • Interlayer cracking and crazing, because the damage is inside a sealed laminate that the scanner merely photographs.
  • Delamination, where layers have separated and the image geometry itself has moved.
  • Silver migration blotching, where the original image content has physically wandered off.
  • Heavy highlight staining, where the lightest tones are destroyed rather than obscured.
  • Severe light fading of the yellow dye, which the AIC wiki identifies as the most light-sensitive dye in integral film.

On a badly faded 1970s SX-70, the area with the least surviving information is very often the faces — which is exactly what you care about. Restoration will hand you a face. Whether it's your grandmother's face is a judgment only you can make, and it's worth making deliberately rather than accepting the first output.

Keep the original scan, always

Restoration is an interpretation. Archive the raw scan separately from every restored version, so you can always go back to what the print actually recorded.

The order of operations, condensed

  1. Sort by exposure history. Framed and displayed prints first; shoebox prints are usually more intact.
  2. Handle by the edges. Clean dry hands or gloves. No wiping, no solvents, no cutting the frame.
  3. Scan at 600–1200 DPI, whole print including the border, TIFF or PNG, with a ~5mm spacer to kill Newton rings.
  4. Archive the raw scan in two places before touching anything.
  5. Restore the file, then upscale if you plan to print.
  6. Store the physical prints cool, dry, dark, in PAT-passed enclosures — and leave them there.

FAQ

Should I cut the white border off? No. Conservation guidance says the border should never be removed — it's a pollutant barrier and part of the print's structure. Scan the whole thing.

Can I clean a dirty Polaroid? Not the image surface. Handle by the edges, blow off loose dust, and leave anything bonded to the surface to a conservator.

What DPI should I scan at? 600 minimum, 1200 if you plan to reprint larger. The image area is only about 3.1 inches square, so 300 DPI gives you under a megapixel.

Why does my scan have rainbow rings? Newton rings, from the print's clear top sheet touching the glass. Lift the photo about 5mm off the platen.

Can AI fix a cracked or blotchy print? It can disguise it, not recover it. Cracking, delamination, and chemical blotching are physical damage inside a sealed print.
