How to Remove Date Stamp From Old Photos (and Keep It)

Write the date down first, keep the untouched scan, then remove the orange digits with a healing tool or a written AI edit. Face overlaps need extra care.

To remove a date stamp from an old photo, scan the print, write down the stamped date, and save the untouched scan. Then work on a copy: brush over the orange digits with a healing or removal tool, or describe the change to an AI image editor. Plain backgrounds are a two-minute job. Digits printed across a face or patterned clothing need more checking.

The step most guides skip is the first one. On many family prints, that small orange number in the corner is the only date anyone recorded. If you remove it before writing it down, you lose it for good.

Before you remove it: save the date

A date stamp is not a sticker on the print. The camera put the digits onto the picture when it was taken, so they are part of the image itself. That makes them annoying to remove and useful to keep.

Do these three things before editing:

  1. Keep an untouched scan. Scan at a resolution suited to how you'll use the photo and save it with a name such as beach-trip-original. Every edit happens on a copy. Our guide to scanning old photos covers settings and handling.
  2. Write the date somewhere that survives the edit. Put it in the filename (1994-07-12-beach-trip.jpg), in the caption or description field of your photo app, or in a spreadsheet next to the album. If you are sorting a whole box, our guide to organizing old family photos shows how to set up names and folders first.
  3. Check whether the date is plausible. The camera stamped whatever its clock was set to. Canon's own instructions for a current compact camera warn that "date stamps cannot be edited or removed, so confirm beforehand that the date and time are correct" (Canon support). That is a modern camera, but the principle is the same: the stamp is only as reliable as the setting. A Christmas tree in a "June" photo, or a baby who looks older than the year suggests, means the clock was probably wrong.

Record a wrong date too

If the stamp is clearly wrong, write it down anyway, with a note such as "stamp says 1988-01-01, probably summer 1991." A wrong stamp still links a print to others shot on the same camera.

Pick a tool for where the digits sit

The right tool depends less on the software and more on what is behind the numbers.

Scroll horizontally to see all columns.

Where the stamp sitsWhat usually worksWhat to watch
Sky, wall, grass, sand, floorAny one-tap removal toolRepeated texture or a visible smudge
Edge of a patterned object (tiles, fabric, leaves)Clone or Heal with a chosen source areaPattern lines that don't line up
Across skin, hair or a faceCareful manual work, or an AI edit you check closelyInvented features; see the section below
Over writing, a sign or a numberUsually leave it, or cropTools guess letters and get them wrong

Cropping is a valid answer, too. If the stamp sits in a corner with nothing important around it, a slight crop removes it without inventing a single pixel.

How to remove a date stamp on a computer

Photoshop: Remove tool, Spot Healing Brush or Content-Aware Fill

Adobe's Remove tool is the quickest option for a corner stamp. Adobe's help page says to "brush over an area you want to remove or use the brush like a lasso to loop around an area to remove." Set the brush slightly larger than the digits and paint across all of them in one stroke. The Mode menu lets you choose "Generative AI on, Generative AI off, or Auto (May use generative AI)," and Adobe notes that "Generative credits will not be deducted for using the Remove tool" (Adobe: Remove tool).

For a few digits on a plain background, the Spot Healing Brush (shortcut J) also works; Adobe describes it as a tool that "quickly repairs image imperfections" (Adobe: Spot Healing Brush). Click digit by digit rather than dragging across the whole number if the background has texture.

For a stamp near detail you care about, select the digits and use Content-Aware Fill, which opens its own workspace with more controls than the one-stroke tools; Adobe's Content-Aware Fill guide walks through them. Whatever tool you use, work on a duplicate layer so the original pixels stay underneath.

GIMP: Heal and Clone (free)

GIMP has no one-click remover, but its manual tools handle date stamps well. The GIMP manual calls the Heal tool (shortcut H) "a smart clone tool on steroids": you Ctrl-click a clean area to set the source, then paint over the digits (GIMP docs: Heal). On plain backgrounds, Heal blends the patch with the colors around it.

When the digits cross a straight line, such as a table edge or a horizon, use the Clone tool (shortcut C) instead. You set the source by "holding down the Ctrl key and clicking in the desired source image" (GIMP docs: Clone), then paint along the line so it continues through where the stamp was. Work on a duplicate layer so you can compare by toggling it on and off.

How to remove a date stamp on a phone

Photograph or scan the print first, then use the editor you already have:

  • Apple Photos (Clean Up). On a Mac, open the photo, click Edit, then Tools, choose Clean Up, and "click, brush, or circle what you want to remove" (Apple: Remove distractions on Mac). Clean Up is an Apple Intelligence feature; Apple's support page lists iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Macs with M1 or later (Apple: Clean Up requirements).
  • Google Photos (Magic Eraser). Tap Edit, find Magic Eraser, then "tap, draw a circle around, or brush the area of the photo you want to edit" and choose Erase. Use Save as copy, which Google describes as making "a new photo with your edits without changes to the original" (Google Photos Help).
  • Snapseed (Healing). Google's help page for the Healing tool says: "Simply brush or tap unwanted spots to watch them disappear" (Snapseed Help). Zoom in first so your finger covers only the digits.

Phone tools are fast, but they work on whatever resolution you give them. A blurry phone snapshot of a print gives you a blurry result with no stamp.

When the stamp is over a face, you're reconstructing

The digits were added on top of the scene, so whatever sat under them is mostly or entirely lost in the print. No tool can reliably recover it. Every method above fills the gap with a best guess from the surrounding pixels or from what an AI model has learned.

On sky, that guess is invisible. On a cheek, an eye or a hand, it is a new invention. Apple even warns that in Clean Up, "if you brush over a person's face, the face may become blurred with a pixelated effect" (Apple), so a face under the stamp may come back blurred instead of repaired.

When the stamp touches a person:

  • Compare the edit with the original at 100% zoom, looking at eye shape, mouth and skin texture.
  • Ask someone who knew the person whether the face still looks like them.
  • Keep the stamped version if the edited one doesn't. A visible date is better than a face that isn't quite your grandmother's.

Our guide to removing scratches from old photos makes the same point for creases: repaired detail is rebuilt, not recovered.

Removing a date stamp in 43frames

43frames has no brush, mask or selection tool, so you can't paint over the digits. What you can do is describe the edit in words. In the Studio, the edit models take your photo plus a written instruction:

  • Everyday (edit), "Touch up a photo you add," costs 2 credits per image.
  • Best quality (edit), "Most faithful edits to a photo you add," costs 4 credits per image.

Upload a working copy (not your only scan) and write something specific, such as: "Remove the orange date numbers in the bottom-right corner. Keep everything else in the photo unchanged."

These models redraw the image rather than erasing exact pixels. Faces, clothing and backgrounds can shift slightly even when you ask them not to. Compare the result with your original, especially faces, and start with Best quality (edit) when people are close to the stamp. If neither result is faithful enough, a manual tool from the sections above gives you more control.

Don't rely on photo restoration for this. It repairs scratches and damage but is not designed to remove printed digits, so a stamp may survive it. Restoration (8 credits per image) is for the next step: fading, scratches and low resolution once the stamp is handled. If the print has also shifted color, see our guide to removing yellow tint from old photos.

Quick checklist

  1. Scan the print and keep the untouched file.
  2. Record the stamped date in the filename or caption, with a note if it looks wrong.
  3. Choose a tool based on what sits behind the digits; crop if nothing important is there.
  4. Edit a copy, on a new layer where the tool allows it.
  5. Check faces and lines at 100% zoom, then keep both versions.

FAQ

Can you remove a date stamp from a physical print? Not safely. The digits are part of the image itself, so there is nothing on top of the photo to wipe off. Scan the print and remove the stamp from a copy of the scan. The print stays as it is.

What is the easiest free way to remove an orange date stamp? On a phone, the built-in removal tools usually do it: Clean Up in Apple Photos on supported devices, Magic Eraser in Google Photos, or the Healing tool in Snapseed. On a computer, GIMP's Heal tool is free. All of them work best when the digits sit on sky, wall, grass or another plain area.

Is the date stamp on old photos always correct? No. The camera printed whatever its clock was set to, and nothing checked that setting. Compare the stamp with clues in the photo itself, such as the season, people's ages, a lab's printing on the back or a handwritten note, before you treat it as the real date.

What if the date stamp is over someone's face? Any tool has to invent the skin, hair or clothing that the digits covered, so the result is a reconstruction, not the real detail. Zoom in, compare with the original, and ask someone who knew the person whether the face still looks right. If it doesn't, keep the stamped version.
