Old photos yellow for two different reasons, and only one is a white-balance fix. How to tell them apart and correct each — by hand or in one pass.
How to Remove Yellow Tint From Old Photos
There are two completely different reasons an old photo looks yellow, and the standard advice — click the gray eyedropper on something neutral — only fixes one of them. If the yellow sits evenly across the whole frame, it's a color cast and white balance clears it in about four seconds. If the yellow is strongest in the bright areas and the shadows look fine, it's a chemical stain in the print itself, and white balance will make the photo worse.
Here's how to tell which one you're looking at, and what actually works on each.
The two yellows
A cast is a color shift across the whole image. It comes from the light the photo was taken under, from the paper the print was made on, or — very often — from the scanner's auto white balance guessing wrong on an already-warm print. Every pixel is shifted in the same direction by roughly the same amount, so one correction fixes everything.
A stain is added material, and it isn't even. The most common cause is incomplete washing during processing. The Library of Congress puts it plainly: "Over time, residual fixer left in the photograph causes the image, binder, and support to turn yellow or brown and the silver image to fade." The Northeast Document Conservation Center describes the same reaction as sulfiding, with a detail that matters enormously for your edit: the result is "yellowing, staining, and fading of the image, usually beginning with the highlights."
That last part is the whole game. A stain attacks where there's least image silver — the bright areas — and leaves the dark areas comparatively alone. So the yellow is strongest exactly where a white-balance tool assumes it's weakest.
Acidic storage adds a third source. Album pages and mount board made from groundwood produce acids as they degrade, and those migrate into the print. If your photo is yellower along one edge or in a rectangle matching an old mat, that's the mount, not the negative.
Color prints yellow by yet another route: the three dyes in a chromogenic print fail at different rates. The 30-second test
Open the scan and do this before you touch anything:
- Find something that was certainly neutral — a white shirt, a gray road, newspaper.
- Click it with the white-balance eyedropper.
- Look at the rest of the photo, not the thing you clicked.
If the whole frame snaps to something believable, you had a cast; you're done in the next paragraph. If the thing you clicked goes neutral but the shadows swing blue and the sky or the highlights stay yellow, you have a stain. Undo, and skip to the next section.
Rescan before you edit
Scanner software applies its own color correction, and on a warm print it frequently overcorrects into orange. Turn off auto color and auto exposure, scan flat at 600 DPI or higher, and save TIFF or PNG. Our photo scanning guide has the full settings list. Fixing a cast by hand
Set the black and white points first with levels or curves, then correct color. Doing it in that order matters — until the tonal range is right, you can't see how much yellow is actually there.
Then either use the gray eyedropper on your neutral reference, or pull the blue channel's midpoint up slightly in curves, which is the same correction done with your eyes instead of the software's guess. Check faces last and at 100% zoom. Skin has a narrow believable range and it's the thing every viewer will judge.
Fixing a stain
There is no single slider for this, because the correction has to vary across the frame. What works:
- Correct the shadows and midtones normally, and deliberately leave the highlights alone. Getting three-quarters of the photo right often makes the remaining stain read as age rather than damage.
- Target yellow specifically. In an HSL panel, drop the saturation of the yellow band rather than shifting hue. This drains the stain without dragging skin tones green, which is what a global hue shift does.
- Mask the worst areas and correct them separately, feathered generously. Edge yellowing from a mount is the easiest case — it's usually a clean band.
- Consider going monochrome. If the stain is severe and the original was black and white anyway, convert with channel control and pull the blue channel down. You lose nothing that was really there.
Don't try to fix the print itself
Home remedies for yellowed prints — bleach, dish soap, sun bleaching — destroy photographs. Conservators can reduce staining with aqueous treatment, but the Canadian Conservation Institute is blunt that the underlying silver damage "is irreversible but can be slowed." The original is the archival copy. Edit the scan.
The one-click route
Yellowing is a reasonable fit for AI restoration for the same reason it's tedious by hand: the correction isn't uniform, and a model that predicts what the paper underneath should look like doesn't need you to mask anything. On an evenly stained print it's usually one upload instead of three adjustment layers. On a badly mottled one, judge the result rather than assuming.
In 43frames, photo restoration runs three things on an upload — fix colors, remove scratches and stains, and enhance resolution — each of which you can switch off. For a yellowed print, leave fix colors on and try it with remove scratches on as well, since the same pass handles the mottling that usually comes with staining.
Two honest limits. First, it's a global correction: you don't get to say "only the top-left corner." If the yellowing is confined to one band, a masked manual edit still beats it. Second, restoration has no exposure or brightness control at all — if the scan is also too dark, fix that in your editor before uploading, because 43frames won't.

Keep it from coming back
The scan is now permanent and the print is not, but you can slow the print down:
- Store at 30–50% relative humidity and 70°F or below, per the Library of Congress, and keep daily humidity swings under 5%.
- Get it out of the acidic album. Enclosures should pass the Photographic Activity Test (ISO 18916); "acid-free" on a label alone doesn't guarantee it.
- Never store photos in attics or basements. Interior closets are the best room in most houses.

FAQ
Why do old photos turn yellow? Most often residual fixer converting image silver to yellow-brown silver sulfide, starting in the highlights. Acidic mounts and failing color dyes add their own yellowing.
Will the eyedropper fix it? Only on a uniform cast. If the highlights stay yellow while the shadows go blue, it's a stain and white balance is the wrong tool.
Can the physical print be cleaned? Not at home. Conservators can reduce staining, but the silver damage itself is irreversible. Scan it and correct the copy.
Does scanning in black and white help? It hides the color, not the damage — a yellow stain becomes a gray one. Correct color first, convert after.
