Shopify Product Image Requirements (2026 Guide)

Shopify accepts product images up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB, and recommends a square 2048 x 2048 px file in PNG or JPEG. Hit those numbers and your photos upload cleanly, zoom properly, and line up in the collection grid. Here's the full 2026 checklist, straight from Shopify's own documentation, plus the fastest way to get listing-ready shots.

Shopify's image specs at a glance

These come from Shopify's product media documentation:

SpecShopify's requirement
Maximum dimensions5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels)
Recommended square size2048 x 2048 px
Maximum file sizeUnder 20 MB
Best formatsPNG, then JPEG (WebP, TIFF, GIF, HEIC, SVG, BMP, PSD also accepted)
Media per productUp to 250 images, videos, or 3D models

Two limits, not one

Shopify enforces both a 20 MB file-size cap and a 25-megapixel cap. An image can be small in file size but still exceed 25 MP and fail to upload — so resize to 2048 x 2048 px rather than dumping a raw 8000 px export straight from your camera.

Why 2048 x 2048 and a square ratio

Shopify says a square 2048 x 2048 px image usually displays best, and there are practical reasons:

  • Zoom works. Shopify's zoom needs an image larger than the display area; 2048 px gives shoppers a crisp close-up of texture and detail.
  • The grid stays even. Collection pages place images side by side. Mixed aspect ratios make a ragged grid — pick one ratio (1:1 is safest) and use it for every main image.
  • It loads fast. A 2048 px square is plenty sharp without being a heavy file. Keep each photo well under the 20 MB ceiling so pages stay quick; speed affects both ranking and conversions.

Format: follow Shopify's own order

Shopify lists PNG as the best type for most product images, then JPEG. Use PNG when you need a true white or transparent background; JPEG is fine for photographic shots where file size matters. WebP is accepted too, and Shopify automatically serves WebP to browsers that support it even if you upload PNG or JPEG — so you don't have to convert manually to get the speed benefit.

The fast path to clean listing shots

The hardest part of meeting these specs isn't the pixel math — it's getting an evenly lit photo on a clean white background without a lightbox. You can shoot it yourself (our guide to taking product photos at home covers a DIY setup), or generate the background. The white-background product photo workflow walks through removing and replacing backgrounds, and 43frames has presets built for exactly this — Clean White Product Shot and Amazon White Background — that output a consistent, marketplace-ready square.

Selling on more than one marketplace? Amazon's rules differ from Shopify's; see Amazon product image requirements so one export works for both.
