The instinct when a photo tears is to reach for tape and press the pieces back together. Don't. Tape is the single fastest way to turn a fixable tear into permanent damage. The right move is almost the opposite: handle the pieces as little as possible, scan them, and do the actual repair on the digital copy — where a tear can be rebuilt without touching the original at all.

Here's how to restore a torn photo properly, and where AI does the heavy lifting.

1. Put down the tape

This matters enough to be its own step. The Northeast Document Conservation Center is blunt about it: old repairs were "often made using materials harmful to paper, such as pressure-sensitive (self-adhering) tapes," and even so-called "archival" tapes with synthetic adhesives "may migrate into the paper and be difficult to remove over time." Tape yellows, stains, and bonds into the emulsion — and getting it back off later can require solvents that risk the image.

So the first rule of restoring a torn photo is to not "fix" it physically at all if you can avoid it. The repair happens on the scan.

If it's rare or valuable, stop here

For an irreplaceable original — a one-of-a-kind print, anything with flaking or lifting emulsion, or a photo of real archival value — physical repair is a job for a professional paper-and-photograph conservator, who mends tears with Japanese tissue and wheat-starch paste, not glue. Scan it for the digital restoration, but leave the object itself to a specialist.

2. Reassemble the pieces on the scanner

Lay the torn pieces face-up on a clean scanner bed and fit them back together like a puzzle, edges touching. You're not gluing anything — you're just holding the picture together long enough to capture it in one pass.

  • Wipe the glass and handle pieces by their edges; skin oils become stains later.
  • Nudge the fragments so the tear lines meet as closely as possible. A tight seam is far easier for software to rebuild than a gap.
  • Scan at 600 DPI or higher (800–1200 for small or badly damaged prints), and save as TIFF or PNG rather than JPEG so you don't bake in compression artifacts.

If a piece is genuinely missing, scan what you have anyway. The software works from the surrounding image, so more intact area around the loss means a better fill.

3. Let AI rebuild the tear

This is where the digital approach pulls ahead of any physical repair. AI restoration detects the tear line and reconstructs it by inpainting — reading the texture, tone, and pattern on either side of the break and painting the seam back in. A clean scratch or a straight tear across a background usually vanishes in a single pass. A ragged tear through detailed areas may need two.

Work in the same order that any restoration follows: repair the damage first, then reduce noise and fading, and sharpen faces last. Keep the untouched scan

Save the original scan before you restore anything. A rebuilt tear is the software's best guess at what was there — you always want the ability to go back to the real, damaged version.

4. Know what no tool can recover

Be honest with yourself about the missing pieces. AI fills a gap by extending what surrounds it, so it's excellent at rebuilding a torn sky, a patterned wall, or a straight seam. It is guessing when a whole face, a hand, or a chunk of text is simply gone with nothing nearby to reference. That's reconstruction, not restoration — sometimes convincing, sometimes not, and worth reviewing before you print it as if it were the real record.
