Etsy Product Photography: What Etsy Actually Wants
Prepare accurate Etsy listing photos: original-product rules, useful views, image size, thumbnail crops, and the limits of generated scene concepts.
Etsy Product Photography: What Etsy Actually Wants
Start an Etsy photo set with the item you will send. Show its size, finish, variation and any wear a buyer needs to know about. Styling helps explain the product, but it should not disguise what the buyer receives.
Etsy's image and listing guidance was checked on September 7, 2026. Use the linked sources for the current requirements and any exception that applies to your item.
Use the actual product
Etsy's Listing Image Requirements generally require original photos of the finished item. Its exceptions are specific: customized items need a finished example in the first image; additional mockups may show options. Production-partner rules distinguish a uniquely manufactured item from an original design printed on a base product.
Do not treat those exceptions as permission to replace any handmade item with a generated lookalike. Photograph the actual label, texture, stitching and proportions. If you sell a seller-prompted AI creation itself, Etsy's Creativity Standards also require AI-use disclosure in the listing description. That is a separate question from how you photograph a physical item.
Prepare the image file
Etsy's image help page lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC. It excludes animated GIFs and transparency. Uploads above 1 MB may struggle on slower connections; this is not a universal rejection limit.
Preview the exported colors. If they differ after upload, check Etsy's sRGB guidance. Inspect the actual file before diagnosing an upload problem.
Build a useful shot list
Etsy's seven photo types provide a planning menu:
Scroll horizontally to see all columns.
| View | Information to show |
|---|---|
| Studio | The complete item clearly |
| Lifestyle | How it is used in a real setting |
| Scale | Size relative to a familiar reference |
| Detail | Materials, construction and wear |
| Group | Included pieces or clearly identified variants |
| Packaging | What the buyer receives with the item |
| Process | How the item is made |
Choose views that answer questions about your particular item. The seven types are not a seven-photo minimum or proof that three views will prevent returns. Label variants clearly so a group photo does not imply every version is included.
Check the crop before publishing
The first photo influences the presentation of the following images. Leave space around the product and use Etsy's thumbnail adjustment preview. Make sure the identifying part of the item remains visible in each crop.
A centered item can still lose a handle or strap when cropped. Inspect the preview rather than assuming that a fixed ratio will work for every product. For a simple source setup, see taking product photos at home.
Where 43frames fits
43frames can help explore styling concepts for a scene: props, colors or lighting you might later arrange around the real item. Its product templates do not guarantee unchanged details or approval under Etsy's rules. Even with a reference, generation can alter lettering, proportions and texture.
Browse product templates, open an example in Studio and review the cost before creating. New accounts get 10 starter credits once. Compare the result with your source, keep useful planning ideas and check the listing rules before any publication. See the AI product guide and white-background methods for that distinction.
FAQ
What size should Etsy listing photos be? Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in both dimensions. It also advises at least 635 pixels in each dimension for the first photo to avoid lower search placement.
Why does my Etsy photo have a black background? Transparency is one possible cause: Etsy does not support transparent image areas. Place the product over an opaque background and inspect the uploaded result.
Should Etsy photos be square or landscape? Etsy recommends a horizontal or square first photo. Leave space around the item and use its thumbnail preview to check square, portrait and landscape crops.
Can I replace product photos with AI images on Etsy? Etsy generally requires original photos of the actual product, with limited exceptions for some customized and production-partner items. Check the exception that applies to your item; a generated scene is not automatic permission.
