Beverage Product Photography: A Practical Playbook

Two things make or break a beverage shot, and neither is the camera. First, translucent liquid has to be lit from behind — front light makes it look like mud. Second, glass and glossy cans are mirrors, so you're not really lighting the product, you're lighting whatever the product reflects.

Get those two right and the rest is styling. This is the working method for bottles, cans, and glasses, plus the part most guides skip: the clean hero shot that actually passes a marketplace listing review.

Light the liquid from behind

The single biggest difference between a snapshot and a commercial drink shot is where the light is.

Commercial photographer Rob Andrew is direct about it in his glass bottle walkthrough: "Backlighting is essential to make the liquid look good. I shoot a strobe through Savage Translum (a 5-foot roll of diffusion material) positioned behind the bottle." He also removes the rear label before shooting, and explains why in a way that makes the whole principle click: "we need light to penetrate the glass and liquid. A rear label will partially block the light coming through the liquid."

That's the mechanism. The color of a beer, a kombucha, or a cold brew is something light does on its way through the liquid. Light bouncing off the front of the bottle never enters it, so the liquid renders as a dark shape.

Lighting manufacturer broncolor's own bottle lighting writeup shows the standard structure: an acrylic diffusion panel behind the subject lit by two separate sources — a gridded reflector, which they describe as "the main light" shaping the transparent object, plus a softbox responsible for "this extended gradation" — with a further light handling "the reflective parts of the bottle (the lid)".

The budget version: a sheet of white translucent acrylic, a shower curtain, or plain tracing paper taped over a window frame, with one light or a bright window behind it. The bottle sits in front. That's the setup.

Elevate the bottle

Commercial product shooters stand bottles on a small clear or frosted riser. Without it, backlight never reaches the bottom of the glass and the base goes dead. Adrian Harrison of Master Product Photography: "When photographing on a table, slightly elevating the bottle like this is essential."

When backlighting stops working

Here's the boundary nobody states: once the liquid is effectively opaque, the backlight stops being a liquid light and becomes a background light.

Harrison draws the line explicitly in his wine bottle guide — use a lit translucent background for white wine and other see-through bottles, but "You can use foam core board or white paper for the background if you're photographing red wine bottles."

That transfers directly to a lot of real product ranges: stout, cola, amber kombucha in a dark bottle, coffee concentrate, sauces, opaque cartons. For these, the backlight's job becomes separating the silhouette and putting a rim on the shoulders, and all the interesting work moves to the front — shaping a clean highlight and controlling reflections.

Killing reflections

Reflections are what makes glass and glossy labels hard, and there's a mental model that makes it tractable. From an Fstoppers breakdown of commercial photographer Rob Grimm's method: "The key to photographing any reflective product is to remember that you aren't necessarily lighting the product; sometimes you are lighting up objects around the product that will reflect off the product back into the camera."

Four techniques, in order of how much they'll help you:

1. Diffuse through something smooth, not something wrinkled. This is the most under-reported tip in beverage photography, and two independent sources describe the same failure. Harrison: "Pop-up diffusers could be used but they aren't as good as diffusion paper or acrylic. The reason is that the diffusion paper and acrylic is perfectly smooth and wrinkle free – popup diffusers are not and the wrinkle lines will show on your bottle as reflections." Food photographer Joanie Simon makes the same point about softbox nylon: creases in the fabric become visible artifacts on a highly reflective object.

2. Black cards to draw the edges. This is the technique that turns a shapeless glass blob into a bottle. Harrison, on shooting against a lit white background: "you'll need to add two pieces of black cardboard to either side so you're left with a 12 inch window showing the white background. These black pieces are important to control light reflections on the sides of the bottle. The black pieces make nice, dark edges and they will help define the sides." He adds a sizing rule — narrow strips for clear bottles, because wide black cards start showing through the glass and look wrong.

3. Put the label light high and steep. For the light that hits the front of the bottle, both photographers independently arrive at the same position. Rob Andrew: "we want it up high and angled down sharply so that the reflection of the light source in the glass is mitigated as much as possible." Harrison uses a small gridded softbox rather than a large one, with a retoucher's logic: "I want the reflection to be as small as possible to make it easy to photoshop out later."

4. Cross-polarization, if you need it. A polarizing gel over the light plus a circular polarizer on the lens, rotated until the reflection drops out. It works, and Harrison — who uses it — still advises most people to skip it: "Cross polarization is overkill for most people and you'll be fine if you use a small softbox." He's right for most beverage work. It costs you a meaningful amount of light on both ends and a lot of fiddling, and it rarely removes a reflection completely.

Cans are a different problem

Almost every good technical guide on this subject is about bottles — including all the ones cited above. So the section that follows is reasoning outward from those sources rather than quoting a can-specific one, and it's worth flagging that rather than dressing it up. Here's which principles carry over and which don't.

What stops applying: the backlight-through-liquid trick. A can is opaque metal. There is no glow to create, and a light directly behind it does nothing but rim the edge.

What applies with more force: everything about reflections. A can is a glossy convex mirror, which means it reflects a compressed image of the entire room — including you, your tripod, and the ceiling. Grimm's principle is the whole game here: build the reflection you want rather than trying to remove the one you have. A tall strip-shaped source produces the elongated vertical highlight that flatters a cylinder; a bare bulb produces a hotspot that blows out the label. Black cards on either side define the can's edges exactly as they do a bottle's.

What's specific to cans: three things worth checking in the viewfinder before you shoot. Rotate the can so the seam is hidden at the back. Decide where the top of the can sits relative to the lens, since a can shot from dead level shows no lid at all while a slightly raised camera shows an ellipse of the top — both are valid, but be deliberate. And watch the wraparound label, which curves away much faster than a flat bottle label and can push key text out of legibility.

Cross-polarization is worth trying earlier on a can than on a bottle, since there's no dark liquid behind the label to swallow stray reflections — though that's an inference from the technique, not something a source states.

Condensation, ice, and pours

Fake condensation

The mix is settled across multiple sources: 50/50 water and vegetable glycerin in a spray bottle or atomizer. Rob Andrew specifies exactly that, and Creatively Squared's condensation guide gives the reasoning: "Too much glycerin, it'll be hard to spray. Too much water, it'll not stay for a long time on the surface." Creatively Squared reports the spritz lasting "for hours or even days" on the surface once mixed correctly.

Two prep steps that show up independently in two sources, and that matter enormously if your label is paper:

  • Clear-coat the label first. Rob Andrew: "Before spraying the glycerin droplets on, it's a good idea to clear coat the bottle with some Krylon crystal clear... It serves to protect them from wrinkles and water stains during styling. It also helps the droplets have a tackier surface to stick to. Let it dry at least 30 minutes." The Fstoppers breakdown gives the same advice. Skip this and your paper label buckles on the first spray.
  • Mask what shouldn't sweat. Tape off a bottleneck or a wine glass stem — real condensation forms where the liquid is, and droplets in the wrong place read as fake immediately.

Real condensation works too, briefly: a short spell in the freezer gives you genuine beading, but you're racing it as it runs and dries unevenly. For a single shot it's fine. For a shot list it isn't.

Fake ice

Real ice fails on set for one reason — it doesn't hold still. As Photography Pursuits puts it: "Real ice is always changing as you start using it. This means it changes size and shape over time throughout the shoot and can also change how the light interacts with it." That's fatal if you're compositing multiple frames.

The gotcha nobody expects: most fake ice sinks. Real ice floats, so a cube resting on the bottom of a glass reads as wrong before the viewer can say why. Check the buoyancy of whatever you buy in a glass of water before the shoot, and know that cheap acrylic cubes carry visible bubbles and seams that only survive in a dark drink or out of focus.

Splashes: it's the flash, not the shutter

This is stated wrong constantly, so here it is properly. Studio educator Karl Taylor, in his flash duration explainer: "So what role does the shutter speed play in freezing motion with flash? The simple answer to this is 'none'. When using studio flash (or speedlites), it is the flash that freezes the motion." broncolor's own bottle shoot confirms it in practice — they set the shortest available flash duration, 1/5600s, and note it was "by far short enough to freeze the water splash."

Three caveats that matter in a real room:

  • Only when flash dominates. Photographer Neil van Niekerk's whole article on this exists to add the condition — roughly, that the ambient needs to be several stops under the flash exposure, and he hedges even that where there's a bright background. Shooting a pour next to a sunlit window, a slow shutter will smear it regardless of the flash.
  • Read the t0.1 spec, not t0.5. Taylor: the t0.1 figure "is actually the most important because it accounts for nearly all of the whole flash burst," and manufacturers often publish the flattering t0.5 number instead.
  • Power and duration don't move the same way on every light. On speedlights, lower power means a shorter, faster flash. On some studio strobes it's the reverse. Check your own light's spec at the power you actually shoot rather than assuming.

Angle, lens, and straight verticals

The convergent recommendation across working commercial photographers is 85–200mm on full frame, most often a 100mm macro. Rob Andrew: 100mm "tends to introduce less distortion and foreshortening of a bottle and we want things nice and straight and level."

But the reason is usually stated wrong, and B&H's explainer on perspective distortion corrects it: "a rectilinear lens, regardless of its focal length, will not distort objects in the frame, beyond the aforementioned lens distortions," and that "As you move an object closer to a lens of any focal length, the resulting image will show signs of distortion due to the changing angles of light entering the lens." It's the distance that matters. The long lens is just how you buy the distance while still filling the frame. If all you own is a phone or a kit zoom, step further back and crop — that genuinely works.

Keep the camera level with the middle of the bottle. Tilt it up to include the cap and you get keystoning: B&H notes that a tilted camera makes a vertical structure "decidedly narrow as it extends higher in the frame." On a tall bottle that reads as cheap instantly.

Two styling checks before you press the shutter, both from Harrison: make sure "the label is straight and centered when looking through the camera," keeping the gap at each edge equal, and choose a sample where the mold seam falls at the sides rather than the front. Rob Andrew asks clients for multiple samples for exactly this reason, since "sometimes labels are crooked, glass may be flawed, or sometimes the entire bottle may lean slightly left or right."

One light is enough, if you shoot in layers

The setups above use three to five strobes, which most small brands don't have. The workaround is standard practice rather than cheating.

Rob Andrew: "Oftentimes it's wise to take separate shots for all of these components and simply layer them together in Photoshop" — one frame for the cap, one for the liquid and body, one for the labels. The Fstoppers piece says the same to its readers: "If you don't have 5 lights you could shoot multiple shots and then combine them in Photoshop. Feel free to work on just 1 highlight at a time."

Lock the camera on a tripod, don't touch the bottle, move your single light to each position in turn, then stack the frames and mask in the good part of each. A one-light setup can produce a five-light-looking image. The requirement is only that nothing moves between frames.

The hero shot has different rules

Here's the tension nobody flags: the two techniques that make beverage photos beautiful are the two that a marketplace main image can't have.

Amazon's own alcoholic beverages listing guide (a UK document dated 2016, so treat the specifics as indicative) is explicit about props: "It is fundamental that the customer purchases everything represented in the image. If one bottle is offered in the Product Description, then only one bottle should be shown in the image. If a product is offered, for example, in a 6-pack, the product photo must show 6 bottles next to each other (not inset)." Same document: the main image background "must be 100% white," images must be "free from text, borders, frames, logos, labels, pricing or other notices and watermarks," and each flavor variation needs its own picture.

So no poured glass, no garnish, no ice, no splash in the main image. That version has to be a dry, clean, level, centered bottle on white. The practical structure that falls out of this:

  1. Shoot the compliant hero first — dry bottle, clean, straight, white background. See white background product photos for the method.
  2. Then re-style the same bottle with glycerin, ice, and a garnish for the secondary images and social. Amazon permits colored backgrounds and in-use environments on additional images.

Do it in that order. Once you've sprayed a bottle you're not getting a clean dry hero out of it without cleaning and re-coating.

A shot list to work from

For a single SKU, five frames covers almost every placement — and note that they're ordered so the dry ones come first:

  1. Dry hero on white — level, label centered, seam hidden. This is the listing image, and it has to be shot before anything touches the bottle.
  2. Cap and seal macro — still dry. Batch code, closure, tamper band, the ingredient claim you care about.
  3. Wet hero — same bottle, clear-coated and spritzed, backlit. This is the one that gets used everywhere except the listing.
  4. Poured serve — the liquid in the appropriate glass with fake ice and garnish, showing what the customer actually drinks.
  5. Multipack or range — the six-pack or the full flavor lineup, since Amazon requires the main image to show the count you're actually selling.

Where AI fits, honestly

Once you have one clean, well-lit photo of the actual bottle, AI generation is efficient at the parts that are just scene-building — putting your existing packshot on a bar top, a beach, a marble counter, or a seamless white background, at whatever aspect ratio each channel wants.

The honest limit is the same one that applies across the product photography guide: AI can build the scene, but it can't shoot your specific label. Generated text and logos drift. Your can's exact Pantone, your cap's finish, your label's fine print — those need a real photograph of the real product, which is what the whole first half of this article is about. Shoot the packshot properly once, then let generation handle the twenty backgrounds.

FAQ

Why do my drink photos look flat? The liquid is lit from the front. Light has to pass through a translucent liquid for its color to read — put a diffused source behind the bottle.

How do you fake condensation? A 50/50 mix of water and vegetable glycerin, sprayed on. Clear-coat paper labels first so they don't wrinkle, and mask off anything that wouldn't realistically sweat.

Does a fast shutter speed freeze a splash? Not with flash. The flash duration does the freezing, provided the flash is dominating the ambient light.

What lens should I use? 85–200mm on full frame, commonly a 100mm macro. It's really the shooting distance that matters — if you only have a wide lens, step back and crop.

Can I use condensation and ice in my Amazon main image? Generally no. Amazon's guidance requires that the customer buys everything shown, so props and garnishes belong in the secondary images. Shoot the dry hero first.
