Every tutorial for the Ken Burns effect tells you to apply "a slow, subtle zoom." None of them tell you how slow, how much, or how big your photo needs to be — which are the only three things that decide whether it looks like a documentary or a screensaver.

Here are the numbers, the arithmetic that sets your ceiling, and the one setting that separates cheap-looking motion from expensive-looking motion.

What it is, precisely

The clearest definition comes from Apple's Final Cut Pro documentation, which describes the mechanism rather than the vibe: "The Ken Burns effect is actually a Crop effect with two crop settings, one at the clip start and another at its end." You define a start rectangle and an end rectangle over a still image; the software interpolates between them.

That's it. Every implementation — iMovie, Premiere, CapCut, Canva — is some version of those two rectangles.

The four numbers nobody gives you

No manufacturer publishes recommended values for these, so treat them as working rules rather than gospel. They're where I'd start, and they're easy to check against your own footage.

Scale change: 10–20%. Start at 100% and end at 110–120%, or reverse it. Below about 8% the move is invisible and you may as well not have bothered; above about 30% the audience watches the camera instead of the photograph. The move should be noticed in retrospect, not during.

Shot length: 6–8 seconds. Adobe's default for a still image in Premiere Pro is five seconds, which is a good floor and slightly short for a photo you want people to read. Under four seconds the motion feels hurried; past about ten it drifts. If a photo genuinely deserves twelve seconds, give it a slower move, not the same move stretched.

Direction: one axis, matched to the content. Push in toward the subject's face. Pan in the direction someone is looking or walking. Pull back to reveal context you want landing last. What doesn't work is arbitrary diagonal drift: if you can't say in words why the frame is moving that way, the audience can't either.

Easing: always. This is the big one, and it's the difference between the two most common tools. Final Cut applies it automatically; Apple's documentation explains that the motion "accelerates slowly as the animation starts, and decelerates slowly as the clip comes to rest," which "simulates the effects of friction and inertia that occur in the real world." Premiere applies nothing by default — Adobe's own tutorial tells you to right-click the first keyframe and choose Ease Out, then the second and choose Ease In. Linear motion is the single most common reason a Ken Burns move looks amateur. Nothing in the physical world starts and stops instantly.

The arithmetic that sets your ceiling

This is the part every guide gestures at and none of them does.

Your maximum zoom is your source image width divided by your timeline width.

A 3000-pixel-wide scan on a 1920-wide timeline gives you 3000 ÷ 1920 = 1.56x. You can push in 56% before a single pixel is being invented, which is far more headroom than you'll ever use. A 1200-pixel scan on the same timeline gives you 0.625 — you're already below frame size at 100%, so any zoom is upscaling.

Two practical consequences. First, scan at 600 DPI or higher; a 4x6 print at 600 DPI is 2400 x 3600 pixels and has room for anything. Second, if you're working from a small or soft scan and you can't rescan, upscale before you edit, not after — photo upscaling rebuilds resolution on the still, where the model has the whole image to work from, rather than asking a video codec to fake it 30 times a second.

Set to frame size, then scale

In Premiere, Adobe's tutorial has you select your clips and choose "Set to Frame Size" rather than "Scale to Frame Size." The difference is that the former preserves the original resolution behind the scenes, "allowing you to do additional scaling without losing image quality." It's a one-click step that quietly protects every zoom you apply afterward.

Where it came from, and why it has that name

Burns didn't invent it. The technique predates him by decades — the 1957 National Film Board of Canada documentary City of Gold is the example Burns himself has cited, and NBC used it heavily in Meet Mr. Lincoln in 1959, where the trade term was "stills in motion." Burns has credited the photographer Jerome Liebling, his teacher, for how he thinks about stills in film.

What Burns did was make it the visual grammar of a genre. The Civil War premiered on September 23, 1990 to just under fourteen million viewers, and thirty-nine million watched it in its first week — figures from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which funded the series. His own description of why the move exists is the best craft note on this whole subject: "If you tilt down from an innocent young boy's face to find that he's packing two pistols, you've told a story in the revealing of that moment. If everything is merely illustration, there is no point to making movies."

The name is Apple's doing. Steve Jobs proposed calling the iMovie 3 feature "The Ken Burns Effect," and Burns initially refused — in a 2025 interview he recalled saying, "I don't do commercial endorsements," and Jobs answering, "What?" They settled it with a barter rather than a licensing deal: roughly a million dollars of Apple equipment, most of which Burns says he donated. Apple's own documentation has never explained or credited the name; it just uses it.

Using it well across a whole sequence

The failure mode isn't one bad shot. It's twenty photos that all drift the same way, which turns a montage into wallpaper.

  • Vary the move. Alternate push-in and pull-out. Change which edge you start from.
  • Let some shots sit still. A static frame after four moving ones reads as emphasis. Motion on everything is motion on nothing.

  • Match the move to the cut. A shot that ends pushing in cuts cleanly into a shot that starts wide.

Doing it without an editor

If you don't want to keyframe anything, AI image-to-video will take a still and produce a short moving clip from a text prompt. In 43frames, you upload one image, describe the motion you want — "slow push in toward the woman's face, no other movement" — and pick a duration and aspect ratio; the image-to-video models available run from 3 to 15 seconds at 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1.

Be clear about what that is and isn't. A true Ken Burns move is deterministic: you set two rectangles and the software crops between them, so the pixels are exactly your photograph. AI image-to-video is generative — it produces new frames, which means it can add parallax and depth a flat crop can't, and it also means you don't get to specify "exactly 115% by the last frame." For a documentary-accurate archival photo, keyframe it. For a hero shot in a family slideshow where a little depth is welcome, generative motion often looks better than a flat crop.
