Hailuo AI Alternative: What Changed With MiniMax H3

Hailuo now runs MiniMax H3, with 2K, 15-second clips and sound. What its terms say about credits and watermarks, and when a lighter tool fits.

If you're looking for a Hailuo AI alternative, first check that you know what Hailuo is now. Since July 31, 2026, Hailuo runs MiniMax H3, a new model that makes clips up to 15 seconds at 2K with stereo sound and accepts up to 12 reference files. The Hailuo 02 and 2.3 models most comparison pages are still writing about are now labeled legacy. So the question isn't whether something beats the Hailuo of 2025. It's whether you need what Hailuo has become, on a subscription, to turn one photo into a short clip.

Every Hailuo and MiniMax fact below comes from their own pages, read on October 15, 2026. One disclosure first: 43frames runs MiniMax's first-generation video model, Video-01, and nothing newer from MiniMax. We can't offer you H3 by another route. This page is about when a smaller, pay-as-you-go tool is the better fit, and when it isn't.

What Hailuo is now

MiniMax's H3 announcement describes it as "a general-purpose multimodal generation model" that makes video "up to 15 seconds at 2K resolution" with "native stereo sound." MiniMax says it "set aside the Hailuo-02 architecture" to build it. The Hailuo site now leads with "MiniMax H3 LIVE NOW," and on MiniMax's API pricing page the Hailuo 2.3, 2.3 Fast and 02 models sit under "Legacy Models."

The H3 features worth knowing, from MiniMax's video generation docs:

  • Multiple references. Up to nine images, three video clips and three audio clips per generation, "capped at 12 files in total." The Hailuo site calls this Omni Reference.
  • First and last frame. "Provide a first-frame image, a last-frame image, or both, along with a text description."
  • Camera directions in the prompt. You can "add camera motion instructions (e.g., [pan], [zoom], [static])" right after the part of the prompt they apply to.
  • Editing and motion transfer. The H3 announcement lists "multimodal generation and editing" and video-to-video motion transfer.

That's a much bigger tool than the photo-to-clip generator Hailuo was known for. Most "Hailuo alternative" lists online still compare against the older version.

What Hailuo costs, as far as we can confirm

This part comes with a caveat. When we loaded Hailuo's subscribe page, it showed only a placeholder ("From ... /mo") and no plan prices, so we couldn't confirm today's plans. What Hailuo does publish is a payment policy, marked "Last updated: 7/14/2025," a year before H3 launched. It lists plans from Standard at $14.99 a month for 1,000 credits up to Max at $199.99 for 20,000, with extra credits at "$1 for 70 credits." We're not reproducing the full table, because plans have very likely changed since; check the subscribe page while signed in before you compare.

For a current, published per-clip price, MiniMax's API pricing is the better reference. It lists MiniMax H3 at "$0.08 / second" at 768P and "$0.13 / second" at 2K. A 10-second 2K clip through the API is $1.30. The legacy Hailuo 2.3 is "$0.28 per 768P, 6s video." The consumer app and the API are priced separately, so this is a guide to the model's cost, not to your Hailuo bill.

The terms worth reading before you subscribe

The same payment policy, and Hailuo's terms of service (last modified August 19, 2026), carry the rules that cost people money:

  • Unused credits expire monthly. "Unused credits do not roll over to the next month."
  • No refunds. "No refunds shall be issued for payments already made," and cancelling takes effect at the next billing cycle. Failed generations are handled fairly: the system refunds those credits automatically.
  • Free downloads are watermarked. For free users, "video downloads will include a watermark." Standard and higher can download without one. The terms add that you must not "remove, obscure, alter, or disable any watermark."
  • Commercial use belongs to paid plans. Hailuo doesn't claim ownership of content "you generate and download while on a paid subscription plan," including for commercial purposes.
  • The free welcome credits expire fast. New users get "a one-time welcome package of free credits" that "will expire three days after being granted." The policy doesn't say how many.

None of that is unusual for a video subscription. But it's why monthly volume matters more than the headline price.

Where Hailuo wins

For a lot of video work, Hailuo is now the stronger tool.

  • Resolution and length. 2K and up to 15 seconds in one clip, with stereo sound.
  • Reference control. Twelve mixed reference files is direction we can't match. The closest we get is PixVerse, which animates between a first and a last frame.
  • Camera control in the prompt. Bracketed pan and zoom directions give you more say in how the shot moves.
  • Editing and motion transfer. 43frames has no video-to-video, no extension and no editing of footage.
  • Steady volume. If you'll use a plan's credits every month, a subscription usually beats paying per clip.

If any of those describe your work, stay on Hailuo.

Where 43frames fits instead

43frames is a much smaller video tool. You upload a still, pick a model, and get one clip back, with the credit cost shown before you generate. The models are Kling O3, Veo 3.1 Fast, Pika Scenes, PixVerse, Wan and MiniMax Video-01.

Pika Scenes1080p, 5 or 10 seconds12 or 24 credits
Kling O3No audio, priced per second3 credits per second
Veo 3.1 Fast720p with audio4 credits per second
Wan 2.6720p3 credits per second

Credits come in one-time packs from $10 for 100 to $80 for 1,000, with no subscription, and per our pricing page, starter and purchased credits don't expire. New accounts get 10 starter credits, and credits charged for a failed operation are refundable.

What you give up is everything in the section above: no 2K, no 15-second single clips, no multi-reference input, no prompt camera directions, no video editing. MiniMax Video-01 is MiniMax's first-generation model, older than Hailuo 02, Hailuo 2.3 and H3. If you liked Hailuo specifically for H3's look, we're not a substitute.

What you get is a pay-as-you-go account that also handles the photo before it becomes a clip. A clip is only as good as the still it starts from, and the same account has product and headshot presets and photo upscaling for a soft or small source.

A quick way to decide

Count the clips you actually used last month, not the ones you generated, and multiply by three for rejected takes.

  • Under about 20 generations a month: pay-as-you-go is usually the better shape. Credits you don't use stay in your account instead of expiring at the end of the month.
  • Steady volume, 2K output, sound or reference control: Hailuo's subscription, or MiniMax's API if you're comfortable with an API.
  • Commercial or client work: on Hailuo, generate on a paid plan, since that's where its policy grants commercial rights.
  • Still choosing: our roundup of AI video generators for e-commerce covers the field, and Runway gets the same own-pages treatment.

Whichever tool you pick, fewer rejected takes save more than a cheaper rate. How to animate a photo covers the source-photo and prompt choices that get you a usable clip sooner.
